Big Internet, Small World

July 18, 2007 |

That was weird.

Recently, my wife and I decided to sell a clothes rack/dust collector. Some people call them treadmills. We owned it for years, and never really used it, preferring instead the recumbent bikes at the gym.

I posted the treadmill to the Tampa edition of Craigslist. Now, if you’ve not used Craigs, it offers a completely anonymous experience. You can choose to leave personal contact info, or you can just let Craigslist route emails for you, so prospects and spambots can’t scrape the site for emails. I went the anonymous route.

Within a few hours of posting, I got an email through Craigslist. It was from a co-worker’s wife!

Now I’ve only lived in Tampa for 2 years, and I work for a small start-up. I don’t know that many people here!

What are the odds that the first person to contact me without knowing it was me, would be someone I know?

The Internet may be a big place, but it’s still a small world.
